Sailing With Kids

Dreaming of a family vacation in which you can leave the hassle of the past year behind and finally spend some quality time with your beloved family? What could be more relaxing than feeling the warm sunrays on your face and splashes of the blue waters on your feet. Nothing – exactly! There is absolutely no doubt that your vacation should involve the sun and the sea… But what if we recommend you not only to take yourself to this amazing sailing holiday, but your whole family?

Let us guess, since you have small children, you don’t think sailing on a yacht could be an option for you? We understand your doubts! Let us vocalize them for you: “it will be a whole mess and not relaxing at all”, “what about the safety of my kids on a boat?”; “what if they fall from deck”, “sailing boats are not a fun place for children”, “how can I even travel and explore the sailing destinations with my kids”…

Stop stop stop! You are overthinking it! Sailing holidays are perfectly suitable for families with small children and here is why:

Let’s start with your biggest concern: what if the kids will fall from the boat?

They are children, of course they will move and run around a lot and be completely carefree. But if you are very very concerned, don’t worry: on a cruise with kids is a web of lifelines always an option. A lifeline netting surrounding the decks will turn the sailing boat’s open areas into a large playground for your children – and will keep you relaxed and calm. With a lifeline netting, you don’t only give freedom of movement to your child on the boat, but also a peaceful state of mind to yourself during the entire cruise.

For those of you who don’t think this is enough protection, we have good news: a children-sized life jacket is not only an extra protection, but in general highly recommended. If your kid is reluctant to wear them all the time, remember that there are plenty of options for lifejackets for kids, including those designed with their favourite cartoon characters printed on them. That should be enough to make your kid wear it.

The mentioned safety measures are usually very effective. However, remember that setting some rules for the holiday with your child before starting the cruise will make the whole experience go much smoother. As you have house rules in your day to day life, agree on rules for your holiday as well. One of them should be for instance the obligatory wearing of lifejackets on decks. Others can be not to go up on deck without an adult watching them or not to leave the boat without a permission etc.

Of course you can consult the team of HopaYacht regarding your safety concerns and the provision of further safety equipment. We will also be happy to talk to the captain to take all the necessary measures to provide you with a perfectly prepared boat for your kids.

Will your kids be bored on a cruise?

Putting your children on a boat in the middle of the sea might seem to you like you are restricting them in their space to move. Well, think again! Many yachts and gulets offer spacious indoor and outdoor areas, in which both you and your kids can enjoy comfort and fresh air simultaneously. Moreover, on your many stops your kids can will have enough time and space to play. They can swim in the water, run in the nature and enjoy an ice-cream in a town. Also on board children can do everything that they would do on the land. Bring some books, coloring books & pencils and a few of their favorite toys and they will be busy and having fun in every minute of the cruise.

A sailing holiday will be an unforgettable experience for your children. The vacation will be much more magical for them than you can even imagine. On a boat the things your curious child can explore are endless. Have fun with your children by hiking, fishing, swimming and doing water sports together. They will be happy to finally spend some quality fun time with you. What could be better for child than the adventure of living on boat with their parents around all the time. Let them embrace the sea and the land, show them the fascinating underwater world and let them touch sea animals. At night look at the stars together and teach them about the galactic wonders.

Unless you want to, you will furthermore not spend the majority of your time on the boat. However, unlike adults who would prefer relaxing activities like sunbathing, watching the stars and having drinks during their time on board, children require activities to keep them busier. Hence, bring toys that will keep them occupied or a friend, if you don’t want to play with them all the time.

Is travelling and exploring the sailing destinations stressful with kids?

The answers to this question may vary according to the age of your kids and your sailing destinations. If your children are very young, we suggest you to choose itineraries with semi-touristic sailing destinations without mass tourism. For example, small islands and fishing villages are suitable sailing destinations for families cruising with young children. Visiting top tourist destinations during the sailing season, on the other hand, can be hard with your infants or young children due to the crowds. Since younger kids usually don’t listen so much to their parents yet and don’t understand what they can do and what not, crowded places are not a good idea. With older children you may like to consider your child’s interests when choosing a sailing destination. While some children may find cultural attractions fascinating, others may prefer active holidays at destinations, where the nature allows physical activities or the cruise provides water sport facilities.

There is no single way to define Italian cuisine. This is because there is no such thing as Italian food that is typical to all regions of the country. Italy was unified only less than two centuries ago. Therefore, Italy’s regions are culturally very different from one another. These differences are reflected in the food as well. In fact, competition over whose food is the best is the biggest hostility between the regions
